Drama. 8 Performers.
In 1846, nearly 90 pioneers set out from Missouri with the goal of reaching California, all in the name of Manifest Destiny: the settlers' allegedly god-given right to settle and conquer the Americas. When they catch wind of a new shortcut, they venture into truly unknown terrain... unwittingly setting the stage for the greatest, most notorious misadventure of the age. When the families become trapped in the Sierra Nevada mountains, they must make some difficult decisions - decisions which will haunt the survivors and their ancestors for decades to come. Vespers is a poetic and nuanced commentary on colonization and legacy, told around the campfire by a large cast portraying the many doomed overlanders, and narrated by the servant charged with keeping the fire lit.
